Mead Charities Counsel on Shaken Baby Syndrome was established for several reasons. First, to educate people on Shaken Baby Syndrome, how to prevent it and it's effects on victims and their families. Second, to provide support for families that have been effected by SBS. Third, to assist families with information on where to obtain assistance. Last, to do our part to stop these horrific tragedies. There are a lot of statistics out there regarding SBS. There are 1200 to 1500 reported cases of SBS in the United States per year. Approximately 25% of the victims of SBS die, less than 5% survive and go on to live normal lives. The rest will struggle through the effects of their injuries and will depend on someone else for their care for the rest of their lives. Unlike diseases that effect children, Shaken Baby Syndrome is 100% preventable. Anyone that has been around children can understand how easy it is to get frustrated with a child that is unconsulable. In order to prevent SBS, individuals must learn how to recognize when they are getting frustrated and call for help or just walk away. Some might think that calling for help is a sign of failure. It is not. Calling for help is a much better alternative than loosing control and injuring or worse yet killing your child. In addition to the victim, each SBS case effects many people. |
